Need to burn during the fire season?

During the Statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (which normally lasts from 1 October to 31 March each year although the dates can vary) you are required to have a PERMIT to light a fire.

Just because it's the Bush Fire Danger Period doesn't mean you can't use fire - but there are restrictions to ensure fire is used safely.

Getting a permit is free and easy.

If a permit is required, you can apply online here.
Alternatively, you can call the RFS Fire Control Centre in Queanbeyan on 02 6128 0600.

Whichever way you apply, a Carwoola Brigade Permit Officer will contact you, and arrange a mutually suitable time for an inspection of your proposed burn.

A permit is a privilege, not a right. As a guide, Permits will not be issued where:
* A suitable water source is not available to control the fire,
* The proposed burn exceeds 1.5m tall and/or 2-3 meters in diameter
* Where the material is green (not seasoned)
* Where building materials and other foreign objects are present
* Where the proposed burn endangers buildings or property.

Notify the RFS

After receiving your permit, you must notify the RFS not less than 24 hours in advance of lighting up. You can do this here: RFS Online Notifications

Notify your neighbours

You must also notify your neighbours not less than 24 hours in advance of lighting up so they know what's happening.

You are responsible

If your fire escapes your property, you are liable - so take great care. You must:
*check the weather
*stay in attendance
*have sufficient fire fighting gear on hand
*abide by the conditions of your permit
